Harry Brown

Harry Brown

Harry brown is presented as a well dressed man. He always wears a suit and a tie. He is also show to be very organised and has daily routines, for example making breakfast and then going to see his wife. His wife is in hospital but he goes to visit her everyday. This helps to show how lonely he is as well as caring. Its clear that he also has clear strong morals, such as respect for women. He also goes to see his friend, Leonard. They play chess together, this also gives an idea to his personality. Not many people play chess much any more and it is seen as a game for older people, as well as intelligent people. This gives the audience an early idea that Harry is very cleaver.

Police

There is a female and a male inspector. The male inspector seems to be more like the people from the estate. He clearly doesn’t believe in the ability of the police and he doesn’t think they have the power to stop whats going on. He doesn’t seem to have any emotions, he sees his job as just a job. The female inspector seems more upper class, from a better background, she is well dressed and well spoken. She cares more about whats happening and believes more in the ability of the police. She puts in more effort and time. The police as a whole know whats going on and they know the people that are doing it, they just need the evidence to prove it.

youths / gang members

The main gangster is noel (ben drew - plan b) Ben doesn’t come from a wealthy background, so he might know what its like so he can portray that through his acting Noels comes across as the leader of the gang however it is actually his uncle that has control over the gang. Noel comes across as really confident. When he is being interrigated by the police, he is really confident. When he is around his uncle however, all of his confidence goes. This whows the power that his uncle has over him. These members of the film are considered to be lower class.

messages- I think the message in this film is that this is what things could turn into. If someone doesn’t do something about what is happening now then there wont be a chance to stop it before things get to a point where they cant go back and this actually do get this bad. also, i think it is a just a slightly exaggerated version of what is actually happening.

British Films

Notting hill

This film is set in one of the main parts of London, Notting hill. This is a big tourist attraction so many people would have heard of it and therefor be interested in it. Also, the main actor, Hugh Grant, is a typically British person. He has a strong British accent and fit in with the traditional view of a British person. This attracts a lot of people, as Hugh Grant is a well know actor who has been in many films. The main actress is Julia Roberts, but she is American. This would also attract a big audience as it would attract an American audience. Bringing the two nationalities together helps to attract a big, and varied audience.

Fish tank

This film is set on an estate. It doesn’t look very appealing or attractive. The main issues faced are violence. As soon as the film starts there is a lot abuse and violence shown. This reflects some of the issues that actually happen in parts of Britain. The main actress is a previously unknown actress; this was her first acting role. I think this is a good idea as there are no expectations. Nobody knows anything about her so it easy to imagine that this is her life and it makes it more believable.

Atonement

This film is set in the countryside, the big house and posh car clearly show that it is about an upper class family. There is a clear divide between the different people in the house. There is one man who is the servant, he is clearly not very respected and is just ordered around with no respect given tO him. As well as this there is a man who was brought up in the family but not actually family, he lives on his own in a separate part of this house. The divide between the people also adds to the time of the film and the type of family it is. There are few well know actors including Keira Knightley. This will help to attract a large audience as they will want to see these stars. As they are british it will attract an american audience for example as there would be an interest for the typical british culture and actors, as well as the fact that it is set near the war time.

sound

How does a key sequence of a filmcreate menaing, generate response or give narrative clues through the use of sound and images?

The scene from the film helps to create meaning and generate a response by using sound and images.

There are exmaples of diagetic and non diagetic sounds throught out the clip. When the boy crashes into the car after jumping off of the building, he creates a diagtic sound. by doing this it helps to add more drama but still keep it realistic.

An example of the use of non diagtic sound is the voice over. By using a voice over, the audience get a running commentary and overall idea of what is happening.

Throughout the whole scene, there is a soundtrack being played. it starts in a typical superhero style. this makes it parallel to what is happening. When the character is introduced, the soundtrack stays the sam, however its style is slightly changed. At this time the setting also changed to a school. The style of music fitted well into the atmosphere of the school.

By clearly showing they are in a school, thr viewer instantly gets some informtion about the character, as well as the situation he might be in. As well as the overall use of sounds help to create an idea of what might be happening.

Mise-en-scene

The poseidon adventure

Scene- 4/5 minutes

The team are at a stage where they need to get to the engine room. To get there they need to go through a series of corridors but they are all underwater.

Mise-en-scene

  • - Lighting
  • - Costume and props
  • - setting

Lighting

The scene has very dimmed lighting. One reason for the darkness would be that evidently most of the lights are broken or have stopped working after the boat turned over. Another reason is to reflects the seriousness of the situation and to add drama and tension.

Setting

This scene is in one of the rooms of the boat. It appears to be some kind of boiler rooom. In the middle of the room is a pool of water which leads down to the engine room. Part of the scene is also underwater. By making it underwater, it helps convey to the audience the problem that they are facing.

costume and props

The cast are wearing party clothes with the women wearing dresses and heels and the men wearing suits. However, they clothes are clearly ripped and dirty. This is due to the challenge and obsticles they have had to face. The props that were used in this scene include a rope and a dead body. These props help to identify what they have to do and the seriousness of the situation.

My marketing film

Tower Heist

Director: Brett Ratner

Genre: Comedy

Cast: Ben Stiller, Casey Affleck, Eddie Murphy, Judd Hirsch, Matthew Broderick

Trailer: The trailer helps to attracts the audience by clearly showing different aspects from the film. It gives enough information to show the audience what the film is about but at the same times does not give away the ending. By showing some of the most attractive parts of the film, it attracts the type of audience that will like them moments.

The trailer also helps give the audience an idea of what type of film it is. For example the lighting helps to reflect the genre.
